Singapura cats are rare. In 2000, only 144 Singapuras were registered in CFA, and in 2006, only 88 Singapura kittens.

The Singapura needs more genetic diversity. The gene pool is too small. Genetic studies have confirmed that the Singapura has become so inbred that the amount of genetic variation is getting dangerously low. The Singapura and Burmese had the least diversity. That tends to lead to higher levels of illness (Lyons, 2008)

It is very expensive to breed healthy Singapura cats. No outcrosses are allowed in most associations. However, outcrossing is the only way to increase the genetic diversity. The offspring from that mating can decrease the probability of genetic diseases being passed on.

For us to get the science we need, independent research that does not ignore or trivialize cultural and social variables must continue.
