German VersionKunst macht Wissenschaft Art originally refers to above average skills as a result of learning or practice. "Technique" and "technology" come from "techne" which is the Greek word for art. Until the 18th century, art and science naturally overlapped, complemented, and enriched each other. Of this, Leonardo da Vinci is only the most famous example. Since then it seems as if science excludes art. It is important to overcome popular misconceptions and stereotypes. Art can help science impart knowledge and finance research. Art and science, like feminine and masculine, are not seperate entities or opposites. Both artists and scientists develop techniques, models or theories, to discover the truth. Science should be humane, not masculine-typed or without emotion. Whenever science turns authoritarian and dogmatic, science goes back to art and turns to its methodology, especially its diversity of methods [Weibel, P. (1998), The Unreasonable Effectiveness of the Methodological Convergence of Art and Science. In C. Sommerer & L. Mignonneau (Hg.), Art @ Science. Wien, New York: Springer.)
